17. Nezuko Kamado

  • Birthday: December 28
  • Anime: First Appearance: Kimetsu no Yaiba, ep. 1 ‘Cruelty’ (2019)

Demon Slayer is a popular anime, with fans enjoying the story and its host of characters. There may be loads of individuals but there is one who wins the hearts of fans, Nezuko Kamado. She is the younger sister of the lead, Tanjiro. Nezuko and her brother are the sole survivors of a demon attack that killed their family. During this event, Muzan Kibutsuji made the girl a demon. Nezuko and her brother roam the country seeking revenge against the demons in an effort to break the curse.

The backdrop to Demon Slayer is Japan’s Taishō Period. The Kamado family lives an isolated life in the mountains. Nezuko is a pretty young girl, with a slender build. She has medium-length black hair and pale pink eyes. In her demon form, her hair features an orange hew and her eyes take on a dusky pink look. She wears a bamboo muzzle to keep her from attacking humans. Due to a weakness to daylight, Nezuko travels inside a box. She is powerful and more agile than her human self. Despite being a demon, she loves her brother deeply and goes out of her way to protect him.

Nezuko is badass. She is the first demon to become a Demon Slayer Corps member. This may be why fans like her character. With a birthday in December, this cute but strong demon girl takes the silver medal on our list.

16. Satoru Gojo

  • Birthday: December 7, 1989
  • Anime First Appearance: Jujutsu Kaisen, ep. 1 ‘Ryomen Sukuna’ (2020)

There are few who have lit up the internet in recent years more than our next individual. Satoru Gojo is a leading character in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. A powerful sorcerer, he is a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Satoru is the first person in his clan to inherit both the Limitless and Six Eyes in four hundred years. Basically, he is OP. These qualities make him the pride of the Gojo Clan. However, he does not rely solely on his cursed technique. This twentysomething uses his vast network to guide and protect his students.

Standing at over six feet tall, Satoru is a lean and fit figure. He has snow-white hair and light blue eyes. The eyes are key to using the Six Eyes technique. This is a skill that works similarly to an infrared scanner to detect cursed energy. He uses a black blindfold or sunglasses to protect them. With friends and family, Satoru seems mild-mannered and laid back. However, he can be cruel to those who cross him.  A blend of ability mixed with keen intellect makes Satoru a nightmare to foes.

Satoru Gojo is a favorite among the series’ fans. In various polls, he comes in as one of the top three best characters. Satoru Gojo is a great character who earned a slot on our list.

15. Megumi Fushigura

  • Birthday: December 22, 2022
  • Anime First Appearance: Jujutsu Kaisen, ep. 1 ‘Ryomen Sukuna’ (2020)

Megumi Fushiguro shares his birthday with National Date Nut Bread Day. A descendant of the Zenin Clan, he is a grade 2 jujutsu sorcerer and a first-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Satoru Gojo would mentor the teen’s physical and jujutsu abilities. Against cursed spirits, Megumi is at the top of his class. He is smart, agile, and skilled. His ability is the Ten Shadows Technique, which uses shadows as shikigami. Due to his status, Megumi is like a big brother to his classmates.

Megumi is a tall, slender teen. He has stylized black hair that ends in spikes. This hairstyle makes it seem like he has a sea-urchin on his head. Megumi has his family’s green eyes. Based on appearances, he looks like the average teen. However, his personality betrays this façade. Megumi does not invest in the drama around him. He is stoic, which makes him flee the antics of his peers. This is someone who is old beyond his years. However, Gojo turns to Megumi to look after his peers and to guide them.

In fan polls, Megumi often takes one of the top three positions. There is little doubt that like the character and his development. This may not be the case here but Megumi Fushiguro has a well-earned spot on our countdown.

14. Asuka Langley Soryu

  • Birthday: December 4, 2001
  • Anime First Appearance: Shinseiki Evangelion, ep. 8 ‘Asuka’s Arrival in Japan’ (1995)

Of all the birthday lists created, this is the first time my favorite anime orange-haired girl takes a spot on one of my lists. Asuka Langley Soryu is a major character in the series. Known as the ‘Second Child,’ she is a product of the Evangelion Project. Asuka is a brave, bright, and resolute teen. She can come off as having an inflated image of self-worth. Ego and intelligence serve her well as a pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02. A bit isolated, Asuka’s desire is to fit in and make friends.

Asuka has a trim and fit frame. She has long hair, stylized in partial pigtails held in place by either bows or her Interface Headset. Asuka wears her A10 nerve clips to advertise her status as an Eva pilot. Her native language is German but she is fluent in English and Japanese. Added to the mix, she is a genius who earned a university degree as a teen. Asuka wants others to view her as a woman but her emotional growth is a bit lacking. We see this whenever she disagrees with others and asks, ‘What are you stupid?’

Fandom rushes to pick their favorite characters each anime season. However, there are few characters that can hold their fan status past a season or two. After almost three dozen years, Asuka Langley Soryu is the exception to the rule. This month we celebrate the birthday of an icon in anime.

13. Misato Katsuragi

  • Birthday: December 8, 1986
  • Anime First Appearance: Shinseiki Evangelion, ep. 1 ‘Angel Attack’ (1995)

We carry on the countdown with the ‘girl next door’ who happens to be in the military. Major Misato is a key character in the series. Despite her cute exterior, there is a scientific mind working overtime. She leads a team of EVA pilots in their fight against angels. Misato is well-versed in strategy and tactics, which is key to bringing her troops back home. Add to her resume, she also manages the operations of NERV. Before coming to NERV, Misato worked in research.

Misato seems out of place in a military setting. She is of average height and has the body of a model. Her hair is long and parted to the side. She has dark violet hair color and brown eyes. Misato wears a skirt, which shows off her athletic legs. The series references her attractiveness many times over the course of its run. The attention is something that she enjoys. Gifted and hot, this leader is the total package.

There are few anime that hold up over time. This goes double for characters. Despite time, Misato Katsuragi still holds a place in our hearts. She earned this spot on our top ten list.

11. & 12. Mitsuha Miyamazu and Taki Tachibana

  • Birthday: December 1
  • Anime First Appearance: Kimi no Na wa (2016)

The first entry for December features this list’s only body-switching couple… Mitsuha Miyamazu and Taki Tachibana.

Mitsuha is a high school girl from a rural community in the Gifu Prefecture. One day, she wishes to experience life as a high school boy from Tokyo… poof Freaky Friday.

As the transformation is temporary, Taki and Miyamazu must leave clues to one another about their experiences, which helps them both to mature as characters. These exchanges ultimately lead to the two falling in love with one another even though they never formally meet until the very end of the story.

If you are romantic or just appreciate great characters, Mitsuha and Taki are the couple for you.

10. Mai Sakurajima

  • Birthday: December 2
  • Anime First Appearance: Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Sempai no Yume wo Minai, ep. 1 ‘My Senpai is a Bunny Girl’ (2018)

Mai Sakurajima is the protagonist of Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Sempai no Yune wo Minai. She is a notable actor and model attending Minegahara High School.

Mai is sensitive, intelligent, polite, and levelheaded. Due to circumstances, her classmates do not acknowledge Mai’s presence – as if she were invisible. Appreciating her anonymity, Mai wears a bunny costume in the school’s library but this time someone notices.

This chance encounter leads Mai on a journey of personal growth and discovery. Mai Sakurajima approach to life and relationships wholeheartedly embraces the characteristics one associates with Sagittarii.

9. Megumin

  • Birthday: December 4
  • Anime: First Appearance: KonoSuba, ep. 2 ‘An Explosion for This Chuunibyou!’ (2016)

Megumin, an archwizard of the Crimson Demon Clan, is an adventuring companion of Kazuma Sato. She is a Chūnibyō with an eccentric personality and a flair for theatrics.

Saved by an elder magician, Megumin has chosen to buff all her status in explosion magic – makes sense, as fire is the element of Sagittarius. The downside is that she can only use this power once before fainting from exhaustion.

Megumin is both the bratty younger sibling and the heart of Kazuma’s adventure troupe. I think this is why she is one of my favorite anime characters.

Fun fact… Megumin is the Japanese nickname given to girls named “Megumi,” which means blessing.

8. Lelouch vi Britannia

  • Birthday: a.t.b. December 5, 1999
  • Anime: First Appearance: Code Geass, ep. 1 ‘The Day a New Demon Was Born’ (2006)

When filtered through the lens of December birthdays, Lelouch vi Britannia is Anime Planet’s current fan favorite. Code Geass’ protagonist, Lelouch vi Britannia is the Eleventh Prince of the Holy Britannian Empire. Exiled by his father to Japan, he comes to learn the reasons behind his mother’s death. This truth serves to harden his displeasure for the suffering imposed by royal families upon people’s lives and becomes the catalyst for him to become a revolutionary.

Lelouch vi Britannia’s pursuit of righting wrongs and seeking equality leads him down the path to becoming the very thing he detests. With the depth of character development, it is easy to understand why anime fans ranked Lelouch vi Britannia number one for three straight years.

7. Earl Ciel Phantomhive

  • Birthday: December 14, 1875
  • Anime: First Appearance: Kuroshitsuji, ep. 1 ‘His Butler, Able’ (2008)

At age 13, Ciel Phantomhive demonstrated himself as the shrewd protagonist within the Black Butler anime series. As a younger lad, his family’s killers sold Ciel and his twin brother to a religious cult. With the sacrifices of his brother, Ciel enters into a pact with a demon to inflict revenge. With his life in ruin, Ciel and his “black butler” work to restore the family’s estate and fortune. Ciel establishes the Funtom Corporation to fulfill his childhood dream of opening a toy store. In the midst of his professional growth, he never loses sight of exacting revenge upon the people who harmed his family.

Anime fans will find that they can easily empathize with the Earl of Phantomhive’s plight and his desire to set the world right by vanquishing the enemies of the family.

6. Megumi Tadokoro

  • Birthday: December 19
  • Anime: First Appearance: Shokugeki no Souma, ep. 3 ‘The Chef That Doesn’t Smile’ (2015)

Hands down… Megumi Tadokora is December’s waifu. An aspiring chef, Megumi attends the prestigious Tōtsuki Culinary Academy. In the early episodes of the anime, she comes across as a bit mousy and unsure of her abilities. These personal barriers soon give way to increased confidence but never at the expense of Megumi’s core values to help others and be a good person.

Megumi Tadokora’s character serves as the personification of hospitality within this food shōnen. It is not difficult to understand why some fans identify her as their fantasy wife. Too bad, she has her eyes on Sōma Yukihira… right Megumi Tadokora?

5. Levi Ackerman

  • Birthday: December 25
  • Anime: First Appearance: Shingeki no Kyojin, ep. 4 ‘The Night of the Closing Ceremony: Humanity’s Comeback, Part 2’ (2013)

Our list would be remiss if we failed to include Shingeki no Kyojin’s Levi Ackerman. The son of a prostitute and born into squalid settings, Levi grows up learning to be a brute on the mean streets. Under the tutelage of Erwin Smith, he finds meaning in protecting the weak and overcomes his troubling upbringing to become the captain of the Special Operations Squad.

As a Capricorn, Levi Ackerman is a master of self-control and has the ability to lead the way, make solid and realistic plans, and inspire subordinates to accomplish the mission. This may make him appear impersonal but his true desire is to protect all human life… even when those humans are titans. It is difficult not to appreciate Levi’s life story and professional commitment.

4. Misa Amane (Death Note)

  • Birthday: December 25, 1984
  • Anime: First Appearance: Death Note, ep. 11 ‘Assault’ (2006)

Our next December birthday entry is someone I consider one of anime’s best tragically flawed characters… Misa Amane. Known as Misa by her adoring fans, this young model finds herself infatuated with Light Yagami and his work with the Death Note.

Only caring for himself, Light emotionally manipulates Misa into becoming a criminal in order to distract L’s investigation. This leads to Misa’s capture and eventual torture by government officials’ attempt to extract the truth behind the mysterious killings plaguing the nation. She is unwilling to imagine any world where Light is not there by her side.

Misa Amane currently sits within the top 100 for Anime Planet’s favorite anime characters.

3. & 2. Rin and Yukio Okumura

  • Birthday: December 27, 1995
  • Anime: First Appearance: Ao no Exorcist, ep. 1 ‘The Devil Resides in Human Souls’ (2011)

Rin and Yukio Okumura are the twin brother protagonists of Ao No Exorcist. Sons of Satan, the brothers are on a mission to destroy their father. They both attend the Academy of the True Cross as students but Yukio’s studious achievements have catapulted him to become an instructor of the exorcist class.

The role of exorcists is to dispatch demons and human-demon hybrids so the brothers must tread carefully or potentially face dire consequences. Demonstrating you cannot judge a book by its cover, Rin and Yukio earn the trust and acceptance of their peers in spite of the lineage of the two.

1. Hinata Hyuuga

  • Birthday: December 27
  • Anime: First Appearance: Naruto, ep. 1 ‘Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!’ (2002)

In this list of anime characters born in December, one of the most popular kunoichi, Hinata Hyuuga, wraps it up. Once the heir to the Hyuuga clan, Hinata’s gentle personality causes her father to see the young girl as a weak leader, which causes him to disown her – harsh I know.

Hinata is a slender young girl with fair skin. Her eyes are featureless but lavender in color. This is due to a trait passed down from the Hyuuga clan. Her hair is dark blue and cut short, making her appear like a tomboy. As the series progresses, her hair length reaches her hips. She is soft-spoken, which she carried to adulthood. Her skills include controlling chakras, penetrating vision, and physical prowess. Hinata would tie the knot to Naruto and give birth to a daughter and son.

Rather than becoming an over-the-top shōnen trope, Hinata preserves her disposition to become a leader, ninja, and mother. For fans of the Naruto series, it is difficult not to fall in love with the “Byakugan Princess.”
