Jujutsu Kaisen is a highly popular supernatural anime and manga written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. The anime has gotten a staggering amount of audience and critical acclaim. The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with interesting characters, horror-esque monsters, and a deep power system that plays into shonen tropes in a fun and refreshing way.
However, Jujutsu Kaisen is not for everyone. Not everyone will enjoy Akutami’s world or characters. Some people may not care for the horror side of it. Some viewers may be tired of another teenage boy protagonist. Whatever the reasons, fans and critics alike may want to turn to something else.

Blue Exorcist is an anime and manga that follows the story of Rin Okumura as he discovers that he and his twin brother, Yukio, are the sons of Satan. Blue Exorcist is similar to Jujutsu Kaisen in many ways. Both follow a young protagonist with supernatural powers. Both series take place in the modern day.
Where Blue Exorcist differs is in tone and presentation. Blue Exorcist is lighter in tone than Jujutsu Kaisen, and its supernatural beings are less horrifying than the curses in Jujutsu Kaisen. Viewers may find Blue Exorcist easier to watch with its light and comical tone.
9/10 Demon Slayer Explores The Supernatural With A Historical Twist
Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado and his journey to find a way to turn his sister back into a human after being turned into a demon. Like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer deals with supernatural forces and focuses on young, plucky protagonists.
Demon Slayer, however, is set in the Taisho Era of Japan as opposed to the modern day, and the overwhelming power of the supernatural beings in the world is what causes most of the tension in the show. Audiences may prefer this show over Jujutsu Kaisen for its unique setting, intense battles, and overwhelming odds.
8/10 Yu Yu Hakusho Is A Supernatural Anime Classic
Yu Yu Hakusho is an older anime series about teenage delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who becomes a spirit detective after sacrificing himself to save a child from oncoming traffic. Yu Yu Hakusho is considered a classic among anime fans for many of the reasons Jujutsu Kaisen is lauded today.
Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Yu Yu Hakusho focus on fighting their respective supernatural enemies unbeknownst to the world at large. This anime is perfect for those wanting to watch a classic anime with well-thought-out characters and a supernatural tilt.
7/10 Tokyo Ghoul Is Horror Anime For A More Mature Audience
Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki as he navigates being turned into a ghoul after nearly dying by being eaten by one. Like Jujutsu Kaisen, the story follows a young protagonist developing supernatural abilities after an accident. Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Ghoul have an underlying note of horror in both premise and tone.
Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, however, Tokyo Ghoul is intended for an older audience. Kaneki struggles with far darker issues than Jujutsu Kaisen’s protagonist, Yuji Itadori, and the story is presented in a much moodier and melancholic tone in comparison.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the story of alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, journeying to restore their bodies after an experiment gone wrong. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Jujutsu Kaisen are more different than alike, but they do have some similarities, such as a rich power system and intriguing characters.
Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in an entirely fictional setting and tells a story with a much broader reach. Fullmetal Alchemist also has the advantage of being a completed story, meaning fans can watch the story unfold to its completion as opposed to waiting years to see new content.
5/10 Seraph Of The End Throws In A Mishmash Of Monsters To Create A Compelling Story
Seraph of the End takes place in a post-apocalyptic future spurred on by a mysterious disease and a vampire invasion. This particular series is incredibly supernatural heavy, with everything from vampires to demons to angels. It’s a series that takes big risks with its story and setting.
Though its lore isn’t as tight as Jujutsu Kaisen’s and can sometimes feel cobbled together, Seraph of the End sticks to its mish-mashed premise and runs headlong into this unique world with vigor. This story is for audiences who want an apocalyptic setting with a supernatural twist.
4/10 Black Butler Crafts Its Story With Victorian & Gothic Elements
Black Butler, like Jujutsu Kaisen, is surrounded by the supernatural, but that’s where the similarities stop. Ciel Phantomhive and his demonic butler, Sebastian Michaelis, are far different from protagonist Yuji Itadori and his friends in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Instead of modern-day Japan, Black Butler gives viewers a look into Victorian Era London and all the supernatural beings that come with that era. Not only does it differ in setting from Jujutsu Kaisen, but the tone is vastly different as well, with Black Butler being more akin to a dark comedy than a battle anime.
3/10 Devilman Crybaby Captivates Audiences With Its Bold Presentation
Devilman Crybaby is a remake of an older, much less praised anime, Devilman. Devilman Crybaby is praised as a masterpiece from every angle. Its animation is captivating. Its story is riveting. Even Devilman Crybaby’s music is regarded with awe.
Jujutsu Kaisen and Devilman Crybaby have similar premises. Both involve their protagonists merging with a supernatural entity and gaining immense power. Devilman Crybaby, however, goes to significantly darker places than Jujutsu Kaisen does with its premise. Fans looking for a story with darker themes and a brilliant presentation are sure to enjoy this series.
2/10 The Promised Neverland Reels Its Audience In With Its Psychological Horror
The Promised Neverland is a psychological horror about three children who discover their idyllic orphanage is not at all what it seems. Much like Jujutsu Kaisen, this series is full of horrific imagery and tense scenes.
The Promised Neverland heavily focuses on the unknown dangers of the world outside and the demons that inhabit it. While Jujutsu Kaisen is more focused on the battle aspect than its horror elements, The Promised Neverland embraces its horrifying concept. It makes the viewer feel the visceral fear of the unknown along with its characters.
1/10 Black Clover Is Shonen Anime At Its Most Extreme
Black Clover takes place in a fictional world where every person is blessed with a different kind of magic. Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Black Clover are stories with interesting power systems and fairly typical shonen protagonists.
Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, which spends time subverting or commenting on different shonen tropes, Black Clover plays these tropes straight and even uses those tropes to go to their logical extreme. Every battle in Black Clover continues to escalate without it feeling like power-creep is kicking in. Its magic system is simple but effective, and its story continues to build up with each arc.
