Death Note: Season 2 – Release Date, Story & What You Should Know

There may be plenty of thriller anime out there, though none have ever come close to the bar set by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Death Note. The enigmatic story about Light Yagami’s pursuit to bring about a world free of criminals was ironically plagued by innocent blood; getting to see such a dark take on anime was truly shocking as much as it was impressive. Still, the anime hasn’t received a sequel since 2007, so what’s the possibility of Death Note: Season 2?

Unfortunately, neither Studio Madhouse nor Ohba have confirmed Death Note: Season 2. The 37 episodes of the anime adapted all 12 volumes of the manga, and as such, Light’s journey has ended. But in 2020, a one-shot titled Death Note: The a-Kira Story was released, so there’s a possibility we might get a continuation in the future.

When Is Death Note: Season 2 Coming Out?

Sadly, as Death Note: Season 2 has not been announced to be in the works, there’s no release date for the sequel. Instead, we might see the 2020 one-shot, Death Note: The a-Kira Story, be adapted into a movie or anime in the near future.

It’s pretty difficult to deduce whether the Death Note universe will ever be revisited again, but as Ohba did release a post-anime story in 2020, hope still remains.

What Is Death Note: Season 2 About? (Spoiler Alert)

Light Yagami was the original protagonist of the anime, who’s now dead. Accordingly, if the new one-shot is adapted, it’ll introduce Minoru Tanaka, the new owner of the Death Note.

Ryuk will be shown giving Minoru the Death Note, hoping that he’s as entertaining as Light. But instead of continuing Light’s legacy, he sets a plan to auction off the item into motion.

Which Studio Is Making Death Note: Season 2?

The spectacular adaptation we saw in Death Note: Season 1 was made by Studio Madhouse. However, it’s been a really long time since then, and we can’t confirm if Madhouse will lead the project once again.

The anime’s visuals were incredible, and even today it’s heralded to be one that was ahead of its time. Due to that, hopefully, Madhouse lands the upcoming adaptation of the franchise, if there is any.

Where Will Death Note: Season 2 Be Aired?

Ever since airing for the first time back in 2007, the anime has now arrived on all major streaming platforms like Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Netflix. As for Death Note: Season 2, the odds of it releasing on all the mentioned platforms are bright due to the viewer demand being massive, so expect to see it available almost everywhere.

Over a decade has passed since the original anime was released, but to this day the fanbase remains active, hoping for Death Note: Season 2. Whatever may be the case, the one-shot released in 2020 does seem to be a solid lead for a sequel, so as per our speculations, it’s only a matter of time till the franchise returns.

Hopefully not with another Netflix movie, although the guys behind Stranger Things are currently adapting it into a live-action series. Here’s hoping it works.
