Hidden cafe has black tofu & arcade racing for Initial D anime fans

Every nook and cranny in Subang Jaya seems to house an interesting, aesthetic cafe for us to stumble across on the weekends. Another one that has joined this list recently is Fujiwara Tofu Shop – yes, fans of Initial D, the same one from the famed manga and anime series.

Fujiwara Tofu Shop Malaysia - exterior

This themed cafe, located in an industrial park in Subang Jaya, lets diners and die-hard fans step into the world of Initial D’s titular character, Takumi Fujiwara. You can have  Japanese black tofu, race your friends at the cafe’s arcade machines, and snap photos at the legit-looking cafe entrance that brings the iconic fictional setting to life.

Step inside the cafe, and you’ll be swept further into the fictional world, with Initial D posters, car miniatures, and merch found throughout the cafe space. There’s even a life-sized figure of Takumi Fujiwara, and the exact model of his car— a Toyota AE86 in the middle of the cafe floor.

This place also counts as another Instagram-worthy spot to take photos because every corner looks so cool! Just make sure you don’t forget to get a photo with an Initial-D car inside because that’s the highlight.

We also discovered that this establishment draws 2 vastly different groups— not just anime fans but car enthusiasts as well. If you check out their social media pages, you’ll find that this cafe often serves as a hub for car enthusiasts to gather at.

What I tried at Fujiwara Tofu Shop Malaysia

Just like the fictional tofu shop, the cafe serves crispy, flavourful tofu-based snacks such as their drool-worthy Homemade Black Tofu (RM15) a must-try signature dish that is crispy on the outside and incredibly soft on the inside.

The tofu is made with charcoal, showing off a black exterior and grey interior. Its colour had us raising our eyebrows but rest assured that this is not the infamous stinky tofu, and no noses will have to be pinched.

Served with a tangy garlic chilli sauce, the soft and smooth beancurd has a thin, crispy skin and a savoury flavour that blends well with the dip. Once you start popping these addictive bites into your mouth, there’s no telling if and when you will ever stop! We polished the entire plate in minutes.

Apart from their tofu dishes, they also serve a selection of donburi. If you’re looking for something more filling, we recommend trying their Chicken Katsu Don (RM24.90)— a bed of fluffy rice is drenched with thick, rich Japanese curry and served with crispy deep-fried chicken cutlets.

The crispy panko chicken cutlet was fried to perfection and tender on the inside. Paired with the Japanese curry and fluffy rice, it is truly the perfect comfort dish. I really enjoyed the crunchy texture of the chicken and the savoury taste of the curry.

Given its name, it should be no surprise that the Fujiwara Tofu Shop boasts tofu pudding, popularly known as tofufa. There are 3 varieties of tofufa available: the plain Tofufa with sugar syrup, Tofufa with Cincau and Tofufa with Soymilk. We opted for their Tofufa (RM5) which I’m pleased to report is soft and silky-smooth, with hardly any blemish. The syrup was not overly sweet and each bite slid smoothly down our throats.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a cafe to check out this weekend, I recommend Fujiwara Tofu Shop. Even if you’re not acquainted with Initial D, the colourful interior and garage vibes of this two-storey cafe makes it a great place to hang out with your friends— especially if arcade racing is something you enjoy.

Oh, and don’t skip out on the Homemade Black Tofu— it’s so addictive!

Expected damage: RM20 – RM30 per pax
