A new image has been shared for Netflix’s new animated series The One Piece. The series was announced a few weeks ago, but we’ve now learned that the project has actually been in development for longer than expected. In a quarterly financial report, Wit Studio showed that they were working on The One Piece as early as September 2023.
The One Piece’s production committee — made up of Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co. representatives, which says that The One Piece “will be distinct from the TV anime series,” making for a “fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga.”
One Piece is set in a fantasy world and follows the fantastical adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore exotic islands and endless oceans in search for the ultimate treasure ‘One Piece’ to become the next Pirate King. There’s no release date set for this project yet.
The series is inspired by Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, and it will be different from the current anime series. One of the biggest differences we’ve seen so far is the visual style, but I’m mostly curious to see how the story will be handled.
Do you think Wit can live up to Toei Animation’s original series? Or even Netflix’s live-action series?
