If you have watched Fruits Basket before, then you probably know that different members of the Sohma family are associated with different animals present in the Chinese zodiac. These people are possessed by the spirits of these animals because of the Sohma Curse, and they transform into these animals whenever certain conditions are met. These people also exhibit some special characteristics that are associated with the animal spirit possessing them.
In this article, we’ll be talking about all the different members of the Sohma family that are possessed by these animal spirits.
Kyo Sohma – Cat
Just like a cat, Kyo has a very short-tempered and brash personality. This boy is a very good person at heart, but he has a very hard time showing it. Unlike the other animals on this list, the cat is not actually an official part of the Chinese Zodiac. Kyo finds trusting new people to be a very hard task and usually keeps to himself.
Yuki Sohma – Rat
Yuki Sohma is the complete opposite of the previous entry on my list as he has a personality that is loved by everyone. His amazing personality, backed up by his looks, makes him the most popular kid at school. While Yuki is viewed by everyone as perfect, the reality is that this boy has a very broken personality, and he constantly feels sad and isolated because of his dark past.
Hatsuharu Sohma – Ox
Hatsuharu is probably one of the more complex members of the Sohma family, as this guy has two different personalities. Usually, Hatsuharu is calm, kind and likable; however, in the blink of an eye, this guy can suddenly become a completely different person who is foul-mouthed, violent and perverted. Despite his strange personality, he usually acts like an older brother and takes care of others.
Kisa Sohma – Tiger
Now, let’s talk about the first female member of the Sohma family who represents a tiger. Kisa has had a very sad childhood because of her naturally blonde hair and eyes. This girl usually stays silent and reserved because of all the bullying that she faced at school. As the series progresses, we see this innocent and soft-spoken girl face her fears and become a stronger person.
Momiji Sohma – Rabbit
Momiji is a short and cute blonde-haired boy that has a very cheerful and lovable personality. He often acts very childishly as he has a super carefree personality. When Momiji was born and his mother found out that he was cursed, she became extremely saddened and even tried to kill herself. It got so bad that her memories of this child had to be erased.
Hatori Sohma – Dragon
Hatori is the oldest cursed member of the Sohma family, and he is also the most reliable. This young man can seem cold and intimidating from afar, but he deeply cares for all the people around him. He is also able to manipulate the memories of other people. Oh, and he doesn’t transform into an actual dragon! Instead, Hatori is possessed by the spirit of a seahorse.
Ayame Sohma – Snake
Ayame is also one of the oldest members of the Sohma family, and he is the best friend of Hatori. Ayame has a very self-centered personality, and we can often find him praising his own self. Ayame is obsessed with Yuki and wants to get as close to him as possible. He has a very carefree personality, which is the reason why some people can find him annoying.
Isuzu Sohma – Horse
Isuzu is another cursed female member of the Sohma family, and she has a very prideful and fierce personality. Isuzu was a very cheerful and outgoing girl when she was little. However, after her parents abandoned her, her personality and outlook on life completely changed. Isuzu also really dislikes how everyone in her clan submits to Akito Sohma as she is given the role of the God of the Chinese Zodiac.
Hiro Sohma – Sheep
Hiro is cursed by the spirit of the sheep, and he is the youngest cursed Sohma. He often acts too mature for his age and is constantly criticizing the other cursed Sohma family members. Hiro is usually complaining about everything and thinks that he is better than most people around him. Hiro is in love with Kisa Sohma, and he wants to always be there to protect her no matter what.
Ritsu Sohma – Monkey
Ritsu Sohma represents the spirit of the monkey, and he has a very apologetic personality. This guy has very low self-esteem and is usually overreacting to every little thing around him. Ritsu is often mistaken for a girl as he dresses up like a female and looks girly as well. He does so because he feels like there is too much societal pressure on men. As the story progresses, Ritsu slowly starts to become a more confident person.
Kureno Sohma – Rooster
Kureno is one of the oldest cursed Sohma family members. He represents the spirit of the rooster and has a very polite and soft-spoken personality. This guy is extremely kind as he thinks about the well-being of others more often than his own. Despite being one of the oldest, Kureno isn’t too wise and often gets used by others.
Shigure Sohma – Dog
Shigure Sohma is also one of the oldest members of the family, and he views Ayame Sohma and Hatori Sohma as his best friends. Being in love with Akito Sohma, Shigure’s ultimate dream is to break the Sohma curse and make Akito fall in love with him. Shigure is a somewhat perverted guy with a very laid-back personality. However, at the same time, he is very perceptive and wise.
Kagura Sohma – Boar
Kagura Sohma is the final cursed Sohma on my list, and she is possessed by the spirit of the boar. Kagura has a very girlish personality and is in love with Kyo Sohma. She has been in love with him ever since they were little kids! Kagura has a very polite and friendly personality and is generally nice to all the people around her.
