The Economics Behind the Golden Age of Anime


Many consider the 80s to be the golden age of anime, and it’s not hard to see why. Japanese anime studios made strides with the quality of animation and storytelling in movies and shows such as Akira, Nausicaa, Macross, and Dragon Ball.

Certainly, the 90s had its fair share of anime classics, and we have written about many of these great shows and movies on this blog. But these classics do not happen without the anime boom in the 80s. So that is why it’s worth taking a look back at what led up to the 90s.

In their latest documentary, Thisvthattv explores the Japanese economy’s impact on the anime industry and how this played a large role in the 80s anime boom that is often referred to as the Golden Age of Anime.
